Nationwide strike in Belgium: thousands of airline passengers left without flights.
Flight cancellations due to nationwide strike in Belgium
According to The Sun: Thousands of passengers have found themselves at an impasse due to a planned nationwide strike in Belgium that has led to the cancellation of flights at the country's main airports.
Brussels Airport, the largest in Belgium, announced the cancellation of all flights for tomorrow. Some 'arriving flights may also be canceled'.
GettyOther airports, including Brussels Charleroi, which Ryanair operates, also stated that all scheduled departures and arrivals for tomorrow will not take place.
Airports have halted all departures on Tuesday (October 14) due to the strike announced by several unions.
Passengers are urged to contact their airlines for refunds or possible rerouting options.
Financial experts Dot Dot Loans note that about 120 flights are operated daily in Belgium, so cancellations could affect 72 flights to and from the UK, impacting approximately 13,000 passengers.
The most affected will be London Heathrow and Manchester airports. However, cancellations are also possible in Birmingham, London Gatwick, London Stansted, and Edinburgh.
Eurostar passengers have not yet received information about train cancellations to and from Brussels, but they are encouraged to check the timetable.
It is also likely that the strike will affect local public transportation, including buses and trams.
The strike was prompted by employer protests against changes in pension schemes and salaries in Belgium.
Unfortunately, passengers whose flights are canceled are unlikely to receive compensation as such cancellations are considered force majeure. However, airlines are required to offer a full refund or an alternative flight, even with another airline.
Compensation rules for canceled flights
An overview of your rights in cases of flight delays or cancellations, the entire compensation process, and the possibility of coverage for your expenses by your insurance.
What are my rights in case of flight cancellation or delay?
According to UK legislation, airlines are obliged to provide compensation if your flight is delayed for three hours or more.
If you are traveling to or from the UK, your airline must offer a choice between a refund or an alternative flight.
You will be able to obtain a refund for the part of the ticket that you have not yet used.
Therefore, if you purchased a round-trip ticket and the outbound flight is canceled, you will receive a full refund for the return ticket.
If the trip is important, your airline must find you an alternative flight, even with another airline.
When am I not entitled to compensation?
The airline is not obliged to compensate you if the flight is canceled for reasons beyond their control, such as extreme weather conditions.
Cancellations caused by circumstances such as natural disasters, airport workers strikes, or air traffic management issues do not fall under compensation conditions.
Some airlines may expand the definition of 'extraordinary circumstances', but you can dispute this with the aviation regulator - the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
Will my insurance cover me if my flight is canceled?
If you were unable to receive compensation from the airline, your travel insurance may help you recover costs.
Policies vary, so be sure to check the terms, but a delay of eight to twelve hours usually means you may claim a refund from your insurer.
Be sure to obtain written confirmation of the delay from the airport, as your insurer will require documents.
If your flight is completely canceled, you are unlikely to get a refund from your insurance.

Over 13,000 passengers will be affected by cancellations.
This situation is another reminder of how social protests can seriously impact transportation infrastructure. Authorities expect that such strikes may continue if the demands of the protesters are not heard. In this regard, passengers are urged to keep an eye on flight updates and contact airlines for additional information.
