The town of Bad Dürkheim: Wine, traditions and healing springs
According to The Sun: Less than three hours from the UK lies a cozy town that boasts an annual wine festival and seven healing springs. This is Bad Dürkheim, just an hour's drive from Frankfurt Airport in Germany.
AlamyDespite its name, there is nothing 'bad' about this town. It has plenty of interesting places to visit and entertain. Bad Dürkheim is located in the Pfalz region, along the German Wine Route, near numerous vineyards stretching to the UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve.
This forest is rich in historical landmarks such as the ruins of ancient castles. Wine lovers should visit the German Wine Route that passes through the forest, where tourists can visit various 'Hütten' - wooden huts in the woods to taste regional dishes, including Sauerbraten - marinated meat rolls, as well as local wines.
Thanks to its developed wine culture, Bad Dürkheim is also famous for the largest wine festival in the world - Wurstmarkt, which takes place every year over two weekends. This festival, which has been ongoing for 600 years, attracts wine lovers, locals, and tourists from all corners of the world.
During the festival, more than 200 varieties of wines and sparkling drinks from German vineyards are offered. According to Wine Searcher, many vineyards in the region are known for Riesling, and Dürkheim Rieslings are usually dry with varying levels of sweetness.
It is also worth trying ice wine, made from grapes that froze on the vine and has a high sweetness level.
“The price for a quarter liter of wine is only 4.50 euros (€), and you can see the largest wine barrel in the world, which is actually a functional restaurant.”Alamy
Healing springs and resort opportunities
If you are not a wine enthusiast, this town still has much to offer. The name 'Bad' means 'spa', and Bad Dürkheim has seven mineral springs that are considered healing. At the salt evaporation tower, salty water flows down the wall from the springs, enriching the air with beneficial salt aerosol particles.
Visitors can stroll nearby, enjoying the healing atmosphere.
“For just 1.50 euros, you can enjoy the salty air.”

For a more unique experience, the 'Salt Cave' is available - a place where visitors can relax in a salt-rich atmosphere.
To learn more about history, it is worth visiting the ruins of Limburg Abbey, located on a hill overlooking the town and offering stunning views. The central square of the town, known as Römerplatz, is situated in the heart of the Old Town and surrounded by cozy cafes and restaurants.
When ordering coffee in the wine bar “Hansel and Gretel”, you can pay 3.50 euros for cappuccino and only 3.90 euros for homemade cake.
