EU Enlargement Chief: Hungary's Veto Not Required for Ukraine's EU Path.
Statement from the EU Enlargement Commissioner
According to UATV: EU Enlargement Commissioner Marša Koc has stated that Hungary's veto is not necessary for Ukraine to advance its European integration process, despite the ongoing Russian aggression. This represents a significant affirmation that external political obstacles will not derail Ukraine's aspirations to join the European Union. The EU's enlargement process is designed to be merit-based, focusing on a candidate country's ability to adopt and implement EU laws.
Koc emphasized that Russia's aggression and occupation of Ukrainian territory will not be a barrier to Ukraine's potential EU membership. The current process involves Ukraine aligning its national legislation with EU standards, a mandatory step for any country seeking accession. Separately, Ukraine's President has indicated the country will be technically ready within days to open all six negotiation clusters required for EU entry.
Political Hurdles and EU Support
Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is reported to have initiated an anti-Ukrainian campaign two months ahead of elections. However, Marša Koc made clear:
“We do not need Orbán to outline the requirements for EU accession. And Ukraine does not need Orbán for that either.” - Marša Koc
These remarks underscore the independence of Ukraine's European ambitions and the importance of support from the broader European Union institutions.
Commissioner Koc's statement reinforces the EU's determination to support Ukraine, notwithstanding political difficulties that may arise from individual member states. It also demonstrates that Ukraine continues to progress in its integration process, even amid external threats and the internal politics of neighboring nations. Such high-level backing from the European Commission can provide crucial momentum for Ukraine's goal of joining the European community.
