EU Commission Engages All Parties Following 'Druzhba' Pipeline Damage and Fuel Supply Halt.
Druzhba Pipeline Incident
According to UATV: The European Commission is in active communication with all involved parties following damage to the 'Druzhba' pipeline and the announcements from Hungary and Slovakia to suspend diesel deliveries to Ukraine. The Druzhba pipeline is a critical Soviet-era network for transporting oil across Eastern Europe. The Commission's spokesperson for energy, Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, stressed the paramount importance of safeguarding energy supplies for EU member states.
During a briefing in Brussels on February 19, she reported maintaining close contact with the relevant national authorities.
'We are in close contact with all relevant national authorities, and I reiterate that our priority is to ensure the security of supply in our member states,'Itkonen stated. She emphasized that the Commission is liaising with the parties to gain a clear understanding of the repair timeline and the current operational status.
Oil Reserves and Next Steps
Itkonen also noted that Hungary and Slovakia possess strategic oil reserves sufficient to cover their needs for approximately three months. This stockpile could help mitigate the potential impact of the halted diesel shipments to Ukraine. To further address the situation, a special oil coordination group meeting has been scheduled for February 25.
Consequently, the European Commission continues to work diligently to ensure the stability of energy resource supplies in the region, despite the existing challenges. This episode underscores Europe's ongoing vulnerability to disruptions in its energy infrastructure. The Commission's coordination with national governments highlights a concerted effort to maintain supply stability, which could significantly influence the region's energy policy. The outcomes of the upcoming coordination meetings will be crucial in determining how EU nations manage potential resource shortfalls.
