Europe Tightens Sanctions on Russia as France Readies 20th Package Despite US Easing.
Diverging Stances on Russia Sanctions: France vs. the United States
According to UATV: France and several European allies are pushing to maintain and even expand sanctions against Russia, even as the United States partially rolls back some restrictions. French President Emmanuel Macron has announced preparations for a 20th sanctions package, clarifying that the US move is a temporary measure—not a full removal of penalties. He stated,
“Sanctions continue.”
Recently, the US eased certain limits on Russian oil, a step that could allow Moscow to generate roughly $10 billion in revenue. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed the need to ramp up pressure on Russia to force it into good-faith negotiations. He emphasized that
“achieving real security and lasting peace requires overcoming the blockade of the EU’s 20th sanctions package against Russia.”
The Complexity of the Sanctions Landscape
The sanctions situation remains fraught, as different nations adopt varying approaches toward Russia. Europe’s continued push for new restrictions reflects a unified commitment to sustaining pressure on Moscow. This also highlights the critical need for international coordination in responding to ongoing aggression and finding pathways to regional stability.
Ukraine’s role stays central in this dynamic, as it seeks steadfast support in defending its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
