Europe’s Extreme Heatwave Crisis

According to ЦТС — Транспорт: A severe heatwave is crippling transportation networks across Europe. For a second straight week, scorching temperatures—peaking at 41°C during the day in Germany and staying between 26-29°C overnight—have led to tram shutdowns, rail disruptions, and damaged road surfaces.

Bitumen and concrete have buckled under the heat. In Leipzig on June 27, trams ground to a halt as the bitumen softened. The city operates 140 km of tram lines and a fleet of 300 vehicles, but the system could not cope with the extreme conditions. Viktor Zagreb, chairman of the Vision Zero board, remarked:

“Trams were churning through bitumen.” — Viktor Zagreb

The rail network also faced collapse: on June 29, Polish operator PKP Intercity canceled 21 trains, while the UK reduced rail services in the week leading up to June 29. Germany’s Deutsche Bahn allowed penalty-free ticket refunds through June 30—a clear sign of the crisis. Highways have lost their usual speed, with 11 German autobahns reporting heat-damaged pavement. Additionally, from June 29 to 30, between 12:00 and 20:00, restrictions were placed on trucks leaving Ukraine. These events highlight how the heatwave is severely impacting Europe’s transport infrastructure, demanding urgent action to address the fallout.

Climate Change Under the Spotlight

This extreme heatwave underscores growing concerns about how climate change is affecting infrastructure and daily life. Past trends suggest that more frequent and intense weather events could further strain transport systems, especially given limited preparedness for such high temperatures.

European authorities will likely need to take measures for:

  • infrastructure upgrades
  • developing adaptation strategies for new climate realities
