How to Save on Food: 5 Simple Ways to Cut Food Waste

According to The Sun: This week marks Zero Waste Week – a great opportunity to review your habits, reduce surplus, and prepare delicious dinners.

Britons throw away up to £60 of edible food each month, but with the right planning and simple recipes, you can feed your family without any waste.

PLAN AHEAD

Check what you have in your fridge and on your shelves, and plan meals based on what needs to be used first. When shopping for the week, try choosing a theme, such as Italian or Asian, so that the same ingredients are used in multiple dishes, reducing waste.

ALL IN ONE

Use up any leftovers from previous meals for quick bakes. A leftover chicken breast, a couple of sausages, or a handful of vegetables starting to spoil? Chop it all up, season with garlic and dried herbs, and bake in the oven. Serve with rice or potatoes for an easy one-dish dinner.

VEGETABLE RECIPE

Wilted peppers, broccoli stems, and leftover noodles can be stir-fried together for a quick meal. Add soy sauce, garlic, and a fried egg for a budget-friendly dinner. Another option for leftover vegetable peels or stems is to chop them, simmer them in broth, and purée for a tasty soup, then freeze in portions. Or stir-fry leftover vegetables, add three eggs and some cheese for a wonderful frittata.

USE IT ALL

Don't throw away peels, bones, or stale bread. Save them for future meals. Bones can be simmered to make stock for sauces or soups. Stale bread can be baked in the oven for croutons or dried and crushed for breading meat or vegetables for homemade nuggets or veggie burgers.

BAKING WONDER

Today on Channel 4, The Great British Bake Off starts — why not make some zero-waste recipes? Overripe fruits can be used to make muffins or flapjacks, and the flesh of overripe bananas can replace eggs in many cake recipes.
