Flamingos Sighted at Tuzly Lagoons

According to Novyny.live: The first flocks of pink flamingos have been observed in the Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park in the Odesa region, having arrived in late February. According to reports, the initial groups appeared on February 27 and 28, 2023. Ecologists are hopeful for a successful nesting season this year, considering the birds' previous attempts in the area. This national park is a vital wetland ecosystem on the Black Sea coast of Ukraine.

Flamingo Nesting Efforts

In 2023, flamingos nested successfully for the first time in the Tuzly Lagoons, raising approximately 200 chicks. Ivan Rusev, an ornithology expert, reported:

'In 2023, we had our first successful hatch of 200 chicks'. — Ivan Rusev

This marked a significant achievement for the region's ecosystem.

However, the following years proved challenging for the flamingos. In 2024, nesting was disrupted when 400 nests were destroyed. Ivan Rusev noted:

'In 2024, 400 nests were destroyed'. — Ivan Rusev

This was a serious blow to the local bird population. In 2025, flamingos again attempted to form breeding colonies but, unfortunately, did not manage to raise any chicks.

For now, ecologists remain optimistic, as the first flocks of flamingos arriving from the direction of the Black Sea are acting as scouts. 'These are the scouts. They always arrive first to assess the situation,' Rusev remarked. It is clear that future nesting attempts will depend heavily on the ecological conditions in the region.

The Tuzly Lagoons remain a crucial habitat for flamingos, and their return fuels hope for the recovery of these beautiful birds' population. Ecologists continue to monitor the situation closely, hoping for successful nesting in the coming months.

The presence of pink flamingos in the Tuzly Lagoons signals a potential resurgence of their population in the region, which is a positive indicator for the local ecosystem. Nevertheless, given the difficulties these birds have faced in recent years, it is essential that environmental conditions remain stable to ensure their successful breeding. Monitoring these birds remains a priority for local ecologists, highlighting ongoing conservation efforts in Ukraine.
