Raccoon Dog in Chernobyl: Photo Fact of Moose Eating Before Winter.
Raccoon Dog in Chernobyl Reserve
According to ТСН: The camera trap of the Chernobyl Reserve captured a raccoon dog engaged in an interesting activity: enjoying the remains of a moose. Such flexible dietary behavior helps it accumulate energy before winter.
This was reported by the reserve representatives.
“The raccoon dog, or Ussuri raccoon, belongs to species with extremely flexible dietary behavior: it consumes everything available at that moment. Its diet includes small rodents, birds and their eggs, insects, fish, berries, fruits, and even grains,”
— the message states.
Scavenging plays a key role in the diet of raccoon dogs, as their ability to consume animal remains helps them survive periods when other food sources are unavailable. Such behavior is natural and typical for this species.
This is confirmed by a video in which the Ussuri raccoon is peacefully enjoying the remains of a moose: for it, this is not only available food but also a high-energy resource before winter.
In the Chernobyl Reserve, where nature operates according to its own laws, similar episodes occur regularly, reminding us of the crucial role of each species in the ecosystem.
Earlier, a common fox (red fox) was also spotted in the reserve — a cautious predator. It was noted that capturing its photograph is a “little luck,” as wild animals tend to avoid cameras.
This case with the raccoon dog confirms that the nature of the Chernobyl Reserve continues to amaze with its diversity. Unexpected encounters with wild animals encourage us to reflect more on the importance of preserving ecosystems and the species that are part of them. An environment free from human influence opens new pages in the study of wild animal behavior.
