ADHD and Money: 4 Ways to Manage Spending and Avoid Debt

According to The Sun: Having ADHD can complicate managing finances.

Impulsive spending, forgetting bills, and budgeting issues become more relevant for more than two million adults in the UK who suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

GettyFour simple ways to improve budget management with ADHD.

With ADHD Awareness Month approaching in October, we offer some tips to help you stay within your budget.

Stop Impulsive Spending

According to a MoneySuperMarket study, three-quarters of people with ADHD identify impulsive spending as a major problem.

Try unsubscribing from store promotional emails to reduce temptation. If you find it hard to resist, leave the item in your cart for 24 hours — this will allow you to consider whether you really need it. Also, delete card details from websites and your phone to make the shopping process harder.

Turn It Into a Game

Make managing finances an engaging game to interest active minds.

Reward yourself with small treats for achieving financial goals and create challenges like spend-free days or savings collection.

Set aside time for administrative tasks, such as organizing bills, and set a timer for 15 or 30 minutes to see how much you can get done.

Use Technology

According to Monzo research, half of adults with ADHD miss bill payments, which can lead to fines and additional financial stress.

Set up automatic payments for fixed bills such as rent, utilities, and internet to avoid forgetting them. Set up direct debits for savings contributions as soon as you receive your salary — don’t rely just on your willpower for saving.

Visualize Payments

Use visual reminders for payment due dates. This could be a wall calendar with highlighted due dates or reminders on your phone.

Many financial apps use color coding and simple graphs to help track spending and savings, which can be especially useful for people with ADHD.

Try apps like Emma, Plum, HyperJar, or Snoop.
