According to The Sun: Leave your civilized complexes at home, as sea swimming in England and Wales may not be as clean as it once seemed. And here’s why: British water companies are daily pumping sewage into the ocean.

Out of 561 identified swimming spots in England and Wales, only 93 are considered safe for swimming.

“The Sun’s travel team is working with the organization Surfers Against Sewage, which fights for the cleanliness of favorite swimming spots, to collect data on the 93 swimming areas along the coasts of England and Wales that have been least affected by pollution.”

Swimming in contaminated water can lead to illnesses from harmful bacteria, viruses, or pathogens, with gastroenteritis being the most common issue.

Most symptoms are mild, but severe cases may require hospitalization.

The list of the 93 swimming spots is based on the assessments of water companies, which indicate which coastlines are free from sewage contamination.

Popular beaches such as Broadsands Beach in South Devon and Ladram Bay are included in the list of clean swimming waters.

Other locations, such as Low Newton in Northumberland, Whitesands Bay, and Poole Harbour Lake, also make the list.

Alum Chime Beach in Bournemouth, recently recognized as one of the best beaches in the world, has an 'excellent' water quality rating.

Of the 93 swimming spots, 15 are in Devon, 28 in Cornwall, 21 in Wales, and 12 in Dorset, managed by various water companies.

Data do not include water bodies located far from the coast due to possible sewage contamination.

89 swimming spots in Scotland are not included as Scottish Water does not provide data on sewage impact.

Water classifications range from excellent to poor, with only two spots having sufficient classification - Goring Beach and North Shore of Llandudno.

Swimming in sufficient water is possible but carries some risk of illness due to bacteria.

For up-to-date information on swimming spots, it is recommended to use the Safer Seas and Rivers Service app from Surfers Against Sewage.
