Geopolitical Shift: Algeria Replaces Russia with China in the Naval Sector.
Algeria's naval forces have decided to purchase six Chinese 056-class corvettes instead of Russian patrol and missile corvettes. This refusal is an important political step for Algeria, which has previously relied on Russian weapons. Algeria aims to balance its strategic partners and enhance its maritime capabilities.
Algeria began diversifying its fleet by ordering its first Chinese 056-class corvette back in 2021. Following the successful delivery of the vessel in 2023, Algeria decided to order six more such corvettes and turn away from Russian ships.
Analysts believe that this decision by Algeria is part of its strategy to strengthen its naval presence and expand military capabilities. It also indicates the growing influence of China in the region, as China actively offers its military technology and investments in infrastructure and energy.
Algeria's decision may prompt other countries in the region to reassess their relations with traditional arms suppliers and turn to new partners, which could change the geopolitical balance in the Mediterranean region.
