Former Minister Galushchenko Denies Family's Role in Offshore Fund Amid NABU Money Laundering Probe.
Minister Denies Family's Involvement in Offshore Fund
According to Novyny.live: Former Energy and Justice Minister German Galushchenko has publicly refuted allegations that his family invested in an Anguilla-based fund, insisting the investor was a separate individual. This denial comes as the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) investigates the family's alleged role in a money laundering scheme connected to corruption in the energy sector.
On February 17, Galushchenko told journalists that while the fund exists, the investment was made by a specific person unrelated to his family. NABU's investigation alleges that a criminal organization, which included Galushchenko, used the fund to legitimize illicitly obtained money. According to the bureau, over $7.4 million was deposited into the fund's accounts, with more than 1.3 million Swiss francs and 2.4 million euros subsequently transferred to Galushchenko's family. A portion of these funds was reportedly used for his children's education.
Arrest and Court Proceedings
Galushchenko was detained on the night of February 14-15 while attempting to cross the border. He was formally served with a notice of suspicion in the case, codenamed 'Midas.' Court hearings in his case began on February 17, continuing the probe into his activities and financial transactions. This case is part of a broader, ongoing effort to tackle high-level corruption in Ukraine.
This case underscores the critical importance of fighting corruption in Ukraine, particularly within the energy sector, which has seen numerous abuses. NABU's investigation and the ensuing court proceedings could represent significant steps in restoring public trust in state institutions and ensuring accountability for public officials. The situation surrounding Galushchenko may also influence future actions by law enforcement in similar cases involving high-ranking officials and their families.
