Google Maps renames the Gulf of Mexico.
The Google Maps application has changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf
On February 10, starting from the second half of the day, users of Google Maps in the USA saw that the name Gulf of Mexico had been changed to the American Gulf. International users may see both names, but Mexican users will only see Gulf of Mexico.
The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated that she would send a letter to Google questioning the company's decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf on Google Maps.
Google's decision to change the name of the gulf corresponds to their policy of taking into account the differences in names between countries. On mobile devices, Google changes maps according to the user's location.
Apple has not yet updated the name of the Gulf of Mexico or Denali in its 'Maps' application.
In early January, US President Donald Trump demanded that the Gulf of Mexico be renamed to 'Gulf of America'. However, the President of Mexico responded by suggesting that the USA be renamed, calling them 'Mexican America'.
Following Trump's decree, Google decided to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf and Mount Denali to McKinley in the Google Maps service.
