The transformation of the beach in Paignton will cost £20 million

The impressive animation allows residents to catch a glimpse of the bright future of Paignton. The ambitious plans include vital flood protection measures and upgrades to public spaces.

The contractor Knights Brown, selected by Torbay Council, announced the commencement of full-scale work in early November. The project will be divided into three key phases.

The main goal is to protect homes, businesses, and public areas from coastal flooding, as well as to create new promenades, recreational zones, greenery, and improve lighting.

Key phases of the project

The first phase will focus on Paignton Green North, with completion planned ahead of the airshow on the English Riviera in May 2026. The next phase will involve Paignton Green South, while a separate project on Preston's promenade will kick off at the end of the year.

The £20 million project is funded by the UK government and the Environment Agency as part of broader efforts to enhance climate resilience.

During the summer holidays of 2026, construction sites will temporarily pause activities. Residents will be able to access the beaches, although promenades in some areas may be narrowed. Green zones around the works will remain open, and local businesses will operate as usual.

“This is the first major transformational project for Paignton—an initiative that goes beyond just flood protection,” said the deputy leader and cabinet member of Torbay Council, Claire Chris Lewis.

“This project adds significant value to the coastal areas, offering modern design and enhanced public spaces that will provide lasting benefits for the locality,” added the leader of Knights Brown division, Mike Crook.

Torbay Council Thanks to this project, Paignton will receive not only infrastructure improvements but also new opportunities for locals and tourists. The upgraded coastal areas are set to become an attractive place to spend time, fostering tourism and economic growth in the region.
