The death of a teenage rapper led to riots in Lausanne

According to The Sun: The mother of 17-year-old rapper Marvin M., who died in a traffic accident while fleeing the police on a stolen scooter, spoke out about the situation in the Swiss city where unrest related to migrants erupted.

Marvin died on Sunday after crashing into a garage wall while being pursued by police in the Prelaz area. This tragedy triggered mass riots in Lausanne.

Marvin’s mother told the 24 Heures publication:

“My son doesn’t steal scooters. He wasn’t a criminal, he was not known to law enforcement. He was never a troubled child. He was stable. We didn’t see how our scooter was stolen.”

She also mentioned:

“Talking about this makes me feel sick to my stomach.”

The boy's death triggered mass riots, during which youths set buses on fire, threw Molotov cocktails, and pelted police with stones. The central streets of the city turned into a war zone with burning barricades and destroyed buses.

Police responded with water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets. Reports indicate that by midnight, seven arrests had been made, and the situation began to stabilize.

Final details about the incident

Preliminary analysis showed that Marvin did not collide with the police car that was chasing him and likely lost control of the scooter before the crash. Prosecutors emphasized that there was a “significant distance” between the teenager and the police vehicle, and “no contact” occurred.

At the time of his death, the boy was wearing a helmet, despite some accusations. The scooter he was riding was registered as stolen the next day in Oshi, on August 23, and he exceeded the speed limit in a 30 km/h zone.

Marvin’s brother honored his memory on Instagram, noting:

“You should have been home with me, in our room that we always shared, my brother.”

Social issues and government response

Public anger has been growing since the death of a 14-year-old girl in June, who also fled the police on a motorcycle. One of the teenagers noted:

“We want to know the truth about these incidents.”

This was the third death in less than three months in Lausanne during police intervention, and the seventh in the city and the Vaud region since 2016, when five deaths of men of African descent fueled accusations of discrimination.

Marvin was considered a promising rapper, and his friends said that violence in the streets was “uncharacteristic” of him.

The Lausanne authorities responded by deploying additional resources and calling for calm. Mayor Grégoire Junod stated:

“There is a problem of systemic discrimination that needs to be addressed.”

City officials expressed their outrage and shock at the exchange of racist and sexist messages found by prosecutors among current and former police officers.

This situation reflects the growing tension in the society of Lausanne, caused not only by the tragic death of a young rapper but also by broader social issues related to discrimination and violence. The city, which has faced similar incidents before, requires collective action to address these complex issues. The situation continues to demand attention from both authorities and local residents, as only through joint efforts can peace and understanding be achieved.
