Flu outbreak in the USA: highest incidence in the last 25 years.
According to ТСН: The flu outbreak is affecting various countries around the world. In the USA, the highest level of flu and respiratory infections has been recorded since the 1997-1998 season.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 8.2% of doctor visits are related to flu symptoms. Experts believe that the virus has already caused at least 11 million infections, 120,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths, including nine children.
Specialists explain the rapid increase in incidence by a new subvariant of flu A H3N2, known as strain K. It circulated actively in the Southern Hemisphere last winter, particularly in Australia, where a record number of cases was recorded. This flu season of 2025 is considered atypical by doctors: two severe seasons in a row happen rarely, but genetic changes in the virus have made its transmission easier.
Flu Symptoms
Flu usually has an acute course. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms appear suddenly and include high fever, muscle aches, cough, headache, and general weakness. Some patients may experience vomiting, diarrhea, or ear pain. The diagnosis can only be confirmed with a test.
How to Treat the Flu
In most cases, treatment is done at home: rest, plenty of fluids, and antipyretics help ease the condition. If there is severe chest pain, shortness of breath, confusion, or signs of dehydration, it is essential to seek medical attention immediately.
Is the Vaccine Effective Against the New Strain
The current flu vaccine does not correspond to the H3N2 strain, as it was developed before its active spread began. However, vaccination helps significantly reduce the risk of severe disease and hospitalization, as well as protects against other circulating strains.
“Vaccines can prevent serious illness and hospitalization. And they save lives. If you have not yet been vaccinated against flu or COVID-19 this season, now is the time. It is not too late. Choosing vaccination is choosing to protect yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, and your community,” emphasized Massachusetts Health Department Commissioner Robby Goldstein, quoted by CNN.
How to Protect Yourself from the Flu
Experts advise following simple yet effective preventive measures:
- wash hands regularly - the virus is transmitted by droplet infection, and particles getting on mucous membranes increase the risk of infection;
- do not share drinks and food with others, especially during an epidemic;
- wear a mask in crowded places or if you belong to a high-risk group.
It should be noted that hospitals are preparing for a peak in hospitalizations in February, and experts warn that this year’s vaccines may be less effective against the new variant of flu.
In connection with the flu outbreak, it is essential to follow all medical recommendations, as epidemics can significantly impact public health. As past experience has shown, vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect against severe forms of the disease, so specialists advise not to delay vaccination.
