Russian Attacks Damage Over 65% of Kharkiv's Educational Infrastructure.
The State of Kharkiv's Educational Institutions
According to Novyny.live: Russian shelling has damaged more than 65% of Kharkiv's educational infrastructure, which includes schools, kindergartens, and universities. Out of the 184 schools operating in the city, 134 have sustained damage of varying severity. Four of these schools have been completely destroyed and will need to be rebuilt from the ground up.
The situation for educational facilities in Kharkiv is critical. As noted by Olha Demenko,
"Nearly 134 schools are damaged, and another four are completely destroyed. They will not be repaired—they must be constructed anew."This underscores that the scale of destruction requires a massive effort to restore the city's educational framework. The ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine has placed immense strain on civilian infrastructure far from the front lines.
Impact on Universities
In addition to schools, missile and drone attacks have damaged nearly every university in Kharkiv. Olha Demenko also emphasized that
"It is difficult to find a completely intact institution of higher education. Either an academic building or a dormitory has been hit."The city's Department of Education is awaiting an educational subvention from the national government to fund the restoration of these damaged institutions.
The plight of Kharkiv's educational establishments highlights the severe consequences of the war for the city's youth and the community as a whole. Restoring this infrastructure is critically important for ensuring access to learning and supporting the region's future development. While anticipated state funding may provide a crucial first step, realistic timelines for recovery remain uncertain as military attacks continue.
