Life Sentence Upheld by Kherson Appeals Court for Man Who Directed Fire on City.
Kherson Appeals Court Ruling
According to Novyny.live: A 51-year-old man convicted of treason for coordinating Russian military strikes on Kherson will remain in prison for life, with all his assets confiscated, after the Kherson Court of Appeal rejected his challenge. The appellate judges affirmed the original verdict, finding no grounds to overturn the sentence handed down under Article 111, Part 2 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code. In doing so, they fully considered the evidence and circumstances of the case.
The crime was documented by officers of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in the Kherson region. In June 2023, the man joined anti-Ukrainian chat bots, where he relayed the coordinates of Ukrainian Armed Forces positions to Russian intelligence services. This information was then used to launch missile and artillery attacks on Kherson, endangering the lives of civilians. Such actions are a stark reminder of the dangers posed by collaborators during wartime.
Significance of the Sentence
In addition to life imprisonment, the punishment includes the forfeiture of all the convict’s property. This case highlights the critical importance of prosecuting state crimes and safeguarding Ukraine’s national security amid the ongoing conflict. By upholding the severe penalty, the Kherson Court of Appeal has demonstrated its firm stance against those who inflict harm on the state.
This ruling reflects the proactive efforts of Ukrainian law enforcement agencies to combat collaboration and treason, especially under wartime conditions.
The Ukrainian government continues to take measures to protect its citizens and uphold territorial integrity, a priority that remains urgent in the context of the protracted war with Russia.
