Lithuania’s Growing Alarm Over EU Sanctions Policy

According to UATV: Lithuania has voiced serious concerns that the economic priorities of individual European Union member states are weakening the bloc’s sanctions regime against Russia. According to Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, this trend is eroding the effectiveness of existing restrictions. He argued that an increasing number of sanction-related decisions are being shaped by national economic interests rather than a unified EU policy. Budrys warned that this dangerous shift not only hampers the EU’s ability to intensify pressure on Moscow but also undermines the impact of measures already in place.

Latest Sanctions Package Approved

The European Union recently adopted its 21st sanctions package targeting Russia, which imposes restrictions on:

• the banking sector
• cryptocurrency platforms
• vessels linked to the shadow fleet
• companies operating within Russia’s military-industrial complex

EU member states also agreed to tighten visa rules for former Russian military personnel. The package extends the oil price cap for another year. However, deliveries of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to third countries under contracts signed before February 24, 2022, remain exempt from sanctions.

Amid Lithuania’s mounting concerns, it is worth noting that the success of the sanctions hinges on coordinated action among all EU members. Weak alignment risks diluting the sanctions regime, which could reduce pressure on Russia given the current geopolitical climate.
