Trump’s Demands Shape New Russia Sanctions Package as U.S. Senate Signals Approval.
New Sanctions Package Targeting Russia
According to 5 канал — Політика: Democratic senators in the U.S. have indicated they are ready to back a vote on a fresh round of sanctions against Russia, which also incorporates President Donald Trump’s conditions related to Iran. The bill is set to be considered alongside a memorial ceremony for Senator Lindsey Graham, who passed away on July 11. In the final days of his life, Graham had been pushing to get the legislation passed.
The proposed legislation, backed by over 60 co-sponsors, aims to reduce the general rate of so-called punitive tariffs—from 500% down to 100%—on countries that purchase Russian energy resources. This move is designed to increase pressure on importing nations. The largest importers of Russian oil include:
- China
- India
- Slovakia
- Hungary
- Azerbaijan
Meanwhile, the top importers of Russian gas are:
- China
- France
- Japan
- Hungary
- Belgium
The U.S. president is authorized to impose such tariffs on no more than five countries at a time. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has confirmed that his Republican caucus has no objections to the amendment concerning Iran.
“I’m optimistic that we’ll be able to move forward soon,” said Senator Jeanne Shaheen.
Why This Bill Matters
This legislation carries significant weight for U.S. foreign policy, as sanctions against Russia are part of broader efforts to curb its global influence. Lowering the tariff rate could shift how importing countries engage with Russian energy, ultimately affecting Russia’s economy. The bipartisan support from both Democrats and Republicans highlights a shared consensus on the need to maintain pressure on Moscow amid rising geopolitical tensions.
