Increase in ESTA Cost for Travelers to the USA

According to The Sun: Traveling to America is about to become more expensive: the date for the increase in the electronic travel authorization fee (ESTA) has been announced.

Starting from September 30, British citizens traveling to the USA will pay more for their ESTA.

According to Travel Weekly, the US Congress has decided to increase the fee from $21 (£15.61) to $40 (£29.30) for

"travelers applying for the visa waiver program"
.

ESTA is mandatory for those traveling to the USA under the visa waiver program (VWP) and is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

The new fee consists of $10 (£7.43) for application processing and $30 (£22.30) for obtaining authorization.

If ESTA is denied, British citizens will only pay $10 (£7.43) for processing.

The ESTA fee was introduced in May 2022, and it has risen from $14 (£10.25).

This increase is part of President Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill".

Additionally, under the

"law"
visitors may face a "visa integrity fee".

New Fee for Those Who Need a Visa

The new fee will apply to everyone who requires a "non-immigrant visa", such as people traveling for

"business"
, education, or temporary work exceeding three months.

This fee will be about $250 (£185.80) and is expected to be introduced by the end of 2025.

The amount will be charged in addition to other existing visa fees, but it will only need to be paid once.

If the application is rejected, the fee will not be charged.

Travelers may also refund the fee by adhering to the conditions of their visa, such as compliance with employment rules.

Form I-94, which records entry and exit dates from the USA, will also increase from $6 (£4.46) to $24 (£17.84).

However, most British citizens will not require a visa due to VWP, which covers tourism and short-term business trips to the USA.

According to information on the GOV.UK website, travelers can apply for ESTA through the official ESTA website or using the ESTA mobile app.

British citizens with a criminal past, who have been previously denied entry, deported from the USA, or have overstayed their ESTA, will not be able to apply.

Processing an ESTA application may take up to 72 hours.

These are new rules for British citizens planning to travel to America, especially after recent cases of European tourists being detained at the border.

EPA For many British citizens, traveling to the United States is becoming less accessible due to the increase in the ESTA cost and the new visa fee. This may impact tourist flow and travel costs, so it is important to stay updated with current information and plan trips in advance. Travelers should be cautious in preparing documents to avoid additional costs and issues at the border.
