The Legend of LEGO and its Airport

According to The Sun: Did you know that the Lego company once had its own airport? At first, it was a private airfield that later transformed into an international airport with flights to Norway, Portugal, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

Lego Lego

The Lego company was founded in 1932. Over the decades, it transformed from a small workshop in Billund into a business with over 500 employees by 1960.

As the company grew, its founders faced difficulties coordinating commercial flight schedules.

In response to this, Lego decided that it needed its own airfield to be able to fly on its own schedule.

In 1961, the Lego group acquired a plot of land north of its factory in Billund and built a 900-meter long runway.

By 1964, the airfield was expanded to 1600 meters and transferred to a new company that was named Billund Airport.

Billund Airport officially opened its doors on November 1, 1964. For the next five years, Lego freely used the airport under the agreement.

If Lego had not built the runway, perhaps the second-largest airport in Denmark would never have appeared.

Four years after the opening of Billund Airport, the first Legoland opened its doors to visitors.

Modern Legoland and Billund Airport

Legoland Billund is located just six minutes from the airport, making it very convenient for visitors. From the UK, you can reach Billund in less than two hours on direct flights from London.

In 2023, more than two million people visited Legoland Billund. The park features 40 attractions, shows, and themed areas, such as Ninjago World, Knight’s Kingdom, and Polar Land.

The thrill rides at Legoland include the Polar X-plorer, which reaches speeds of over 40 miles per hour, and the X-Treme Racers, which goes 34 miles per hour.

In recent years, Legoland has introduced many new features, including an indoor zip line, bowling, an ice rink, a children's zone, an arcade, a climbing wall, and mini-golf.

Adjacent to Legoland is the Aquadome water park, which features water slides, a lazy river, a storm pool, a large amusement park, a jacuzzi, a sauna, and a cave lagoon.

Experiences at Legoland

“Before we visited, I thought that a whole day with Lego might be a bit boring, but I couldn’t have been more wrong,” shares Caroline McGuire.

“You are inspired to play at every turn, using your own imagination, and everywhere I looked, I saw adults expressing their inner child. I spent 25 minutes next to an Italian, both of us building our best Lego flowers.”

“Of course, my son was also thrilled. He was amazed by the Lego machines that showed how bricks are built in real time.”
