The British Town is Called Little France: Are the Comparisons Justified.
A Town in Wales That Resembles Italy
According to The Sun: In one of the towns in Wales that looks like Italy, a Scottish beach similar to the Caribbean, and an English town reminiscent of Provence... TikTok claims there are many foreign analogues in Great Britain.
I have lived my whole life in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, and was surprised to learn that this 'French' town impresses with its Provençal atmosphere.
Hitchin has a beautiful market square and cobbled streetsAlice Penwill AlamyI never considered it French, but after a series of comments on TikTok, I decided to walk through the town again to see if I missed something.
The Charm of Hitchin
Hitchin, located in the north of the county, is indeed a beautiful market town, nestled among green hills and villages, famous for its cozy atmosphere.
The town has previously earned the nickname 'Little Provence' due to its Instagrammable lavender fields, vibrant gastronomic scene, and quaint buildings.
One visitor posted a TikTok video captioned:
“Provence or not? Faking a French trip in Hertfordshire.”
A local landmark is Hitchin Lavender, located on the outskirts of the town, open from June to August, where you can pick purple flowers and take photos. It reopens later in the year for the pumpkin season.
However, I couldn't understand why one meadow could justify the title of 'French,' so I ventured further to see if there were any more gems in this picture.
French Architecture and Gastronomy
On a gloomy autumn day, I directed my steps to the main market square, trying to spot French features.
Among the cobbled streets, I saw colorful bunting adorning the buildings on the main street. The market square appears the most 'French,' though it resembles a town in the north, like Normandy, more than a southern one.
On both sides of the market stood food and drink stalls, a few chairs, and a large clock, as well as a corn exchange building with a dome and a weather vane — something I have seen in France as well.

Another hint of France was the tall houses and pubs with classic wooden beams and window frames (though this feature can be both French and English).
The town has at least five bakeries, which undoubtedly adds to the Franco-town atmosphere.
On the back side of the square, between the bar and the café, lies Hitchin Arcade, which hosts several independent shops, including a flower shop and a newly opened cat café.
Arcades are often considered French because of their canopies that protect from the rain.
Whether this is enough to deem the town 'French' is up to you to decide.
However, it is undeniable that Hitchin is indeed very beautiful. Recently, HELLO! described it as one of the prettiest market towns in the country, praising it for its 'charm and picturesque quality.'
Muddy Stilettos also named Hitchin one of the best places to live in 2025.
The publication noted:
“Trendy Hitchin is a beautiful market town in northern Herts, located on the banks of the River Hiz. This historic town has narrow winding streets, wonderful architecture, and a traditional market square — and is also extraordinarily stylish. There are plenty of green spaces to enjoy high-quality coffee and watch the world go by.”

Delicious Food and Drinks
No matter what style you're discussing, Hitchin is famous for its vibrant culinary scene.
Some favorite spots include Hermitage, which has a restaurant, cocktail bar, bagel shop, and island bar all in one place.
I particularly enjoy the cocktail bar with its dim lighting in the evening, located in a vintage ballroom with large semi-circular windows and an exposed brick wall.
When the air cools in the autumn, visitors can enjoy their time in pubs, which have comfortable seating both inside and outside due to the many courtyards and gardens.
Kite at The Red Hart is a popular spot, similarly well-known is The George Pub, and of course, there's also Wetherspoons, which here is called The Angel Vaults Inn — with a huge garden at the back.
Regarding food, try The Groundworks, especially my favorite potato balls with fresh herbs.

Another place I recently visited is Los Reyes, a small Spanish tapas bar with a cozy interior, and in the summer evenings, there's a Mediterranean courtyard for lounging.
There is something for everyone's taste, and for locals, Hitchin has recently opened its first Gail's.
Hitchin has also made an appearance on television. Susannah Jones and Jodie Comer filmed here in 2017 for the series Doctor Foster.
Famous scenes were shot in the market square, at Air Coffee Shop, and in Windmill Hill Park overlooking the town.
Those planning a short trip can reach Hitchin in 30 minutes by train from London and Cambridge.
For a pleasant stay in Hertfordshire, consider an English resort with a private beach, an outdoor pool, and a cinema — as well as a new Spanish experience.
Additionally, discover an ancient English forest that served as a backdrop for two Disney films, where deer roam and a unique attraction will open next year.

Hitchin, in the eyes of some, really can impress with its atmosphere reminiscent of French towns thanks to its lavender fields, authentic architecture, and culinary diversity. The town has become popular among travelers due to its vibrant culture and numerous entertainment options. So it’s no wonder that Hitchin is considered one of the prettiest market towns in Great Britain. At the same time, its unique blend of tradition and modernity makes it attractive for both residents and tourists. Read also
