A Quiet Retreat in Grantchester

According to The Sun: Just two miles from the wonderful Cambridge lies the village of Grantchester, known for its tranquility and peace - the perfect place for a day visit.

Here, you can enjoy a slice of cake at the famous Orchard Tea Garden or take a walk through the meadows along the River Cam.

Grantchester is a picturesque village with domes on its rooftops and many pubs in the outskirts of Cambridge.

Just 40 minutes drive from my home in Hertfordshire, I decided to take the opportunity and visit it for a day.

The Atmosphere of a Traditional English Village

On the sunny weekend when I arrived, the village turned out to be extraordinarily quiet, except for the light hum from The Green Man, located in the center.

Grantchester has a traditional English style, and this is probably one of the reasons why it was chosen for filming the television series.

Many people have probably already heard about Grantchester due to the TV drama starring Robson Green and Rishi Nair.

“ITV’s Grantchester airs its final season next year, so for anyone who is a big fan of the show, you’ll get a feel for it just by being there.”

I noticed numerous people posing at recognizable locations, including near the church.

It's easy to spot the vicarage wrapped in wisteria, which, to be fair, turned out to be artificial.

The Green Man Pub - a favorite spot for locals - is located right in the center. Here you can order a drink or sit in the courtyard, just like the characters in the series do.

Famous Places and Culinary Delights

I walked through the village, noticing several pubs, among which the beautiful Rupert Brooke, named after the poet, has a lovely outdoor terrace.

I also noticed The Red Lion, which is tucked away around the corner from The Green Man.

Although I didn't stop at the pubs, I visited the Cambridge Gin Distillery, where they not only sell gin but also offer free samples.

Nearby is the distillery, where interested parties can sign up for a 'Make It' course to create their own gin, and if they like it, buy a bottle.

When visiting Grantchester, be sure to stop by the Orchard Tea Garden, where there is a large open area in the garden.

The garden, founded in 1868, has been a popular tea spot since 1897. It has hosted numerous visits from famous individuals such as Virginia Woolf and E.M. Forster.

Don't forget about Rupert Brooke, who lived in Orchard House and The Old Vicarage in the early 1900s.

At Orchard Tea Garden, I recommend trying the freshly baked scone with jam and cream for £5.40.

They also offer a wide selection of sandwiches, toasts, seasonal hot dishes, and homemade treats, including coffee and pistachio cake.

Walks and Views of Grantchester

After Orchard Tea Garden, you can head to the tranquil Grantchester Meadows for a stroll along the River Cam.

Here, you can see people walking their dogs, cycling, and having picnics. On the water, locals engage in paddleboarding, kayaking, and, of course, punting.

Following the Riverside Walk, you will pass through meadows and reach the city of Cambridge within a mile and a half, known for its university heritage.

Cambridge offers numerous excursions regardless of the season, as well as various pubs, museums, markets, and shops. Be sure to visit Fitzbillies bakery and try their Chelsea bun.

For those arriving in Grantchester by car, keep in mind that the area can be quite crowded, as there is only one parking lot that operates in good weather.

The Orchard Tea Garden has its own parking lot, but it is only for customers, so most visitors park along the roads.

A visit to Grantchester is an opportunity to enjoy stunning views and the serene atmosphere of a traditional English village. The village attracts tourists with its picturesque locations, which are well known due to the popular series. Even simple walks through the meadows and delicious food at the Orchard Tea Garden can be a great way to unwind from the daily routine.
