True Joy on the Water

According to The Sun: Why do boats attract us so much? It's not about huge cruise liners or ferries — I'm happy when I find myself on a sailboat, kayak, or even a pedal boat shaped like a swan.

Rhett, from the children's book 'Sailing Boats in the Willows', was right when he said: “Nothing is more worthwhile than simply playing on boats.” So, I decided that after many years of promising to take a holiday on a narrowboat, it was time to try it.

Our little adventure on a narrowboat in England confirmed that the simple joys are sometimes the most necessary. The landscapes we admired along the Worcester and Birmingham Canal were simply breathtaking.

This canal also introduced me to the rich history of the British canal network, which dates back to Roman times, passed through the industrial revolution, and was revived in the 1960s. Each lock on the canal told its own story.

During our first narrowboat journey, we met many friendly people. In particular, a new neighbor living by the canal proudly showcased his handmade boat crafts.

We embarked on a three-day journey that allowed us to explore the canals and enjoy splendid views. The first leg of the journey amazed us with its beauty — with picturesque bridges and weeping willows.

These are truly ideal intergenerational holidays that bring you closer together — emotionally and physically.

We didn't have to rely on restaurant food, as the kitchen of our 69-foot narrowboat was well-equipped. The small refrigerator could hold enough food for our family of six, and we had opportunities for major grocery shopping along the route.

Meeting the Swans

The ability to stop and explore the surroundings was no problem, as each one of our crew, from five to seventy-five, had their role on board. Narrowboats, though small, are embodiments of thoughtful design.

Almost all our best moments were spent jumping from the shore onto the boat, admiring the birds and greeting swans with a cup of tea. We managed to find time to communicate without the bustle of everyday life and enjoy the true beauty of our little island.

This narrowboat adventure not only brought us closer together but also allowed us to appreciate the value of simple joys in life. During the journey, we learned about the region's history and met friendly people with whom we could exchange experiences. Water travels became not only a way to relax but also an opportunity to see the world from a different perspective, enjoying every moment.
