If you have a subscription to the National Trust or English Heritage, free events are taking place across the country in October. If you don't have a membership, often you can obtain free family entry by keeping an eye out for offers in local newspapers.
You can also use Tesco Clubcard vouchers to get an English Heritage membership. On the cashback site Quidco, you can get a National Trust gift card to pay for entry.
The National Trust has recently launched a new digital adventure 'Stranger Folk', aimed at children aged 7 to 12 in locations such as Belton House in Lincolnshire, Kingston Lacy in Dorset, and Blickling in Norfolk.
Using Annual Memberships
October is a great time to use annual memberships to local attractions that may be hosting free or low-cost events for Halloween and Bonfire Night.
For example, in our area, there will be a monster burying event for just £2, and children with Blue Peter badges can enter for free.

Free Events at Libraries and Museums
Check out local libraries for spooky crafts and stories. For example, Wareham Library in Dorset will be hosting a free spooky object handling session on October 31st.
Museums are a great place to spend time for free, especially when the weather is bad and you need an indoor alternative.
At Fort Nelson, Royal Armouries, near Portsmouth, there will be free Halloween activities including face painting, crafts, and storytelling.
Genuine Free Entertainment
Volunteer organizations often run events at significantly lower prices than commercial companies, while funds go to good causes.
Our local miniature railway is organizing spooky train rides on the last Sunday of October. Entry to the grounds is free, and rides cost about £3 per person.
If you really want to visit a pumpkin farm, look for those where entry is free, such as Undley Farm near Bury St Edmunds.
On October 31st, when it gets dark, it will be the best time for free fun, as everyone will be in costumes and ready to celebrate.
