India Joins Global Crackdown on 'Shadow Fleet,' Impounds Three Oil Tankers Near Mumbai.
Oil Tankers Seized
According to UATV: In a move aligning with a broader international effort, Indian authorities have detained three oil tankers off the coast of Mumbai. This action is part of a global campaign initiated by the United States in January 2023 to combat the smuggling of oil from conflict zones. The so-called 'shadow fleet' is used to circumvent sanctions and disrupt global energy markets.
According to reports, the impounded vessels were engaged in illicit activities and controlled by a 'global criminal syndicate.' They were involved in ship-to-ship transfers of oil on the high seas, a practice that violates international regulations. Following their seizure, the ships were escorted to the port of Mumbai for further investigation.
International Response
These tankers are also linked to Iran and are subject to U.S. sanctions. Separately, 14 European nations have issued warnings concerning Russian shadow fleet tankers operating in the Baltic and North Seas, highlighting the widespread nature of this issue. These coordinated actions reflect growing international concern over the activities of sanction-evading vessels and their impact on global maritime security.
India's seizure of these tankers, alongside similar actions by other countries, signals a strengthening of international cooperation to combat oil smuggling and unlawful maritime operations.
Amidst global economic and political challenges, such initiatives could significantly influence oil markets and the security of vital sea lanes. The increasing focus on this problem may also prompt further measures from nations seeking to protect their national interests in an era of globalization and regional conflict.
