San Antonio: a unique blend of Texas and Mexican cultures
“Travel section (digital) editor at The Sun, Carolyn McGuire, visited this city a few years ago and said: 'San Antonio, Texas, is a completely different experience from other American cities.
“With a large Mexican-American population in the U.S., everything we love about tex-mex comes alive here. In fact, as the birthplace of one of the world's most popular dishes, San Antonio was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2017 - one of only two cities in the U.S. with this honor.
“Beginning the day with breakfast tacos, strolling through the market with large micheladas (spicy beers), floating along the narrow water canals during happy hour with giant margaritas and savoring enchiladas - all this was a vibrant experience. “However, it’s not just delicious, but culturally rich, thanks to the region's rich history.
“The territory we now know as Texas was inhabited by Native Americans over a thousand years ago, and it wasn't until the 16th century that European settlers arrived, after which it was colonized by the Spanish for 300 years before Texas became an independent state in the mid-19th century.
“There are a few American cities that truly have their unique character, and San Antonio is one of them. Here you can feel yourself in America, Central America, or an ancient European city.”
