German Chancellor Issues Statement on Ukraine’s EU Bid: What He Said About Hungarian Minority Rights.
Germany’s Stance on Supporting Ukraine
According to UATV: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has made clear his position on backing Ukraine and its path toward European Union membership, arguing that these matters should not be tied to negotiations between Kyiv and Budapest over the rights of the Hungarian minority. He stressed the need for European unity in the face of the Russian threat, adding that this must not come at the expense of continued European support for Ukraine.
Merz also acknowledged the interests of the Hungarian side, led by Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, in resolving bilateral issues. At the same time, he emphasized that supporting Ukraine should remain a top priority for Europe, regardless of the ongoing talks between Ukraine and Hungary.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been actively involved in discussions regarding Ukraine’s EU accession, highlighting the importance of international backing.
In this way, the German position, as articulated by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, reflects a commitment to maintaining stability and unity across Europe amid current challenges.
This statement could serve as a key signal to other EU member states about the need to continue supporting Ukraine, despite existing political disagreements. Germany’s backing may strengthen Ukraine’s standing on the global stage and advance its European integration efforts.
