Poland's Sikorski: Russia Loses War Initiative, NATO Faces Risk of Staged Attacks.
Shifting Dynamics in the Russia-Ukraine War: New Dangers and Security Concerns
According to Espreso.tv: Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski told CBS News that the momentum in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has shifted, highlighting the need for NATO vigilance and warning of potential Russian military provocations. According to Sikorski, Russia has lost its strategic advantage, while Ukraine has made significant gains—including winning the naval confrontation in the Black Sea and reclaiming over 600 square kilometers of territory this year alone.
Poland remains a crucial ally in supporting Ukraine’s defense, serving as the primary transit hub for weapons shipments. Approximately 90% of all foreign military aid to Ukraine passes through Polish territory. However, these successes come amid growing threats. On June 22, Latvian intelligence reported that Russia is preparing military provocations against Baltic nations or Poland. Meanwhile, Swedish military intelligence has acknowledged that Russia is capable of launching a limited armed attack outside of Ukraine.
Potential Russian Staged Incidents
Sikorski also warned that Moscow might stage a false-flag incident on its own soil to justify an attack on a NATO member state.
“I do not rule out that the Russians could stage a provocation on their own territory to create a pretext for striking a NATO country,” said Radosław Sikorski. He stressed the need for unity among NATO allies, adding: “We must not allow Putin to exploit our divisions.”
The threat extends beyond conventional warfare. In May, analyst Vitaliy Portnikov noted that Russia could resort to hybrid attacks against Poland and the Baltic states. Earlier, in January, Pekka Toveri warned that Russia is preparing for a limited operation against a NATO country. Sikorski remarked that if Putin is truly ready for a ceasefire or peace agreement, he knows how to reach President Zelenskyy.
As tensions persist, NATO’s security role becomes increasingly critical amid Russia’s military actions and potential threats to neighboring countries. Poland’s support for Ukraine’s military efforts and NATO’s readiness to respond to new challenges underscore the importance of international cooperation in modern conflicts. These factors could significantly shape the region’s future, as NATO members must remain united in countering Russian aggression.
