Kyiv's Critical Infrastructure at Risk: Emergency Power Plans Critically Incomplete

According to Novyny.live: Oleksiy Kucherenko, a member of parliament from the 'Batkivshchyna' party, has sharply criticized Kyiv's lack of preparedness for providing emergency power to critical infrastructure, stating that almost nothing has been accomplished. He stressed that backup power systems for vital facilities like the metro, heat carrier pumping stations, and water utilities remain largely unaddressed. This situation is particularly concerning given Ukraine's ongoing energy challenges due to the war.

Kucherenko also refuted claims that an additional 100 MW of co-generation capacity would be operational by year's end. According to him, two 54 MW units are still not online: one might start in March, and the other in the summer.

“The two units are far from being launched. Installation is done, but they are not operational. One might start, God willing, in March, the other in the summer,”
Kucherenko noted during an interview on 'Kyiv Time'.

Wider Energy Context

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has addressed residents regarding the difficult energy situation. This follows an incident on February 7, when one of the units at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant was disconnected from the grid due to voltage fluctuations, creating further strain on the capital's power supply stability.

The energy supply situation in Kyiv is growing more precarious due to this inadequate preparation for emergency power, which could severely impact the city's essential services. The lack of necessary backup capacity for key facilities threatens the normal functioning of infrastructure, especially during potential energy crises.

  • Water utilities
  • Heat carrier pumping stations

City authorities must take urgent measures to improve the situation and ensure a reliable electricity supply to avoid negative consequences for Kyiv's residents.
