Free Transit for Kyiv Students and Schoolchildren Ends: New Fares Take Effect July 1, 2026.
Ukraine Overhauls Public Transport Rules for Passengers
According to Novyny.live: Starting July 1, 2026, Ukraine will revise its public transport policies, affecting groups that previously traveled for free. Under the updated regulations, schoolchildren in Kyiv will need to pay for rides on municipal transit during the summer break from July 1 through August 31. Meanwhile, university students will be charged 50% of the cost of a monthly pass, and school pupils on summer vacation will pay just 25% of the standard fare.
The planned single-ride fare on city-operated transport is set at 30 hryvnias, though the actual cost per trip could drop below 24 hryvnias for those using multi-ride passes. This new pricing structure is expected to launch on July 15, 2026. Importantly, any trips loaded onto transit cards before July 14, 2026, will remain valid for use until September 14, 2026.
How Ride Bundles Affect the Cost
To clarify the new pricing, here is a breakdown of costs based on the number of trips purchased:
- 46 rides will cost 1,088 hryvnias, equating to 23.65 hryvnias per trip.
- 62 rides will total 1,463 hryvnias (23.60 hryvnias per trip).
- 92 rides will come to 2,156 hryvnias (23.43 hryvnias per trip).
- The largest bundle, 124 rides, will cost 2,888 hryvnias, or 23.29 hryvnias per trip.
These adjustments are driven by a need to modernize fare structures in line with current economic realities—a shift that will undoubtedly affect household budgets, especially for families relying on public transit.
The new rules are likely to increase financial pressure on families, particularly during the summer months when children and students use buses and metros more frequently. It is worth noting that these fare changes may be part of a broader transport reform strategy aimed at improving service quality and ensuring the financial stability of transit operators. Careful monitoring and analysis of their impact on the public will be essential.
