China has closed the possibility of international adoption of its children.
Unfortunately, China has announced a ban on the adoption of children by foreigners, with the exception of the children's blood relatives. This was reported by Reuters. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China did not explain the reasons for this decision but noted that it does not contradict international conventions.
All incomplete adoption procedures through agencies will be canceled. American families will only be able to complete the adoption if they have already received permission to enter China.
The Collapse of the Era of Adoption from China
This decision marks the end of the period when China was one of the main sources of children for international adoption. Since 1992, more than 160,000 Chinese children have found new families around the world, especially in the USA.
China has been the leader among child-exporting countries for adoption for many years. The USA has adopted the most Chinese children - over 82 thousand people.
This ban on international adoption coincides with attempts by Chinese authorities to increase the birth rate in the country, which is experiencing a two-year population decline.
