Kremlin Lifts Nearly Four-Year Quarantine Requirement for Meetings with Putin.
Quarantine for Putin Meetings Comes to an End
According to TSN.ua: The Kremlin has ended its quarantine requirement for individuals meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, nearly four years after the restrictions were first imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This move signals a return to pre-pandemic protocols for the Russian leader's engagements. The quarantine regime was introduced in 2020, initially mandating a two-week isolation period, which was later reduced to five days in 2023.
This decision follows the World Health Organization's declaration in May 2023 that the pandemic was over. The lifting of restrictions aligns with a broader easing of measures within Russia, as the national consumer watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, had already rescinded its mask mandate decree back in July 2022.
Implications for International Diplomacy
The removal of the quarantine could facilitate more direct diplomatic contact. In February 2022, Putin met with French President Emmanuel Macron, a significant international engagement during the period of restrictions. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated that for a direct meeting with Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would need to come to Moscow, highlighting the Kremlin's stance on diplomatic protocol.
Ending the quarantine likely reflects the Kremlin's desire to resume more active in-person diplomacy on the global stage. In the context of the declared end of the pandemic, this step may open avenues for renewed negotiations and cooperation, though the international community's response to this policy shift will be closely watched.
