Fuel Crisis Grips Cuba

According to TSN.ua: Cuba is facing a severe fuel crisis, with its remaining oil reserves projected to last only 15 to 20 days at current consumption rates. This precarious situation stems from supply issues with Mexico and a blockade on shipments from Venezuela, which threaten to force the country into strict fuel rationing. This crisis comes as the island nation continues to grapple with a long-standing economic embargo and internal challenges.

Since the start of 2026, Cuba has received a mere 84.9 thousand barrels of oil from Mexico. This figure represents a drastic drop compared to the average daily import of approximately 37 thousand barrels in 2025. Total oil reserves were estimated at 460 thousand barrels at the beginning of the year, a level that has experts deeply concerned about the immediate future.

Potential Economic Fallout

Analysts warn of serious consequences for the country's economy.

Jorge Piñon noted that 'they have a major crisis on their hands,'
highlighting the severity of the situation. Former U.S. President Donald Trump also weighed in, stating
that 'the Cuban regime is very close to collapsing.'
These comments reflect broader international apprehension regarding Cuba's stability as its energy resources dwindle.

Already burdened by significant economic hardship, Cuba now confronts new challenges from this energy shortage. The potential rationing of fuel would impact all aspects of daily life, including:

  • transportation
  • goods supply

Such disruptions could exacerbate existing social tensions. Given its international isolation and various restrictions, finding alternative oil suppliers will be extremely difficult, casting serious doubt on the nation's ability to manage the escalating crisis.
