The Eight European Countries Declared Support for Ukraine: Why This Is Important for Negotiations with the Russian Federation.
During the negotiations between Trump and Putin, Ukraine's position and the issue of security in Europe must be taken into account. Representatives of eight Northern European and Baltic states expressed unwavering support for Ukraine's integrity in their joint statement.
The relevant statement is available on the official website of the Nordic-Baltic Eight.
What the Statement Specifically Addresses
The statement from the leaders of the 'Eight' emphasizes the inadmissibility of negotiating peace with Russia without considering Ukraine's position. The 'Eight' is ready to facilitate a diplomatic resolution to the conflict while continuing to provide Ukraine with necessary military and financial support.
Moreover, the 'Eight' countries remain supporters of applying restrictive measures against the Russian Federation. The statement emphasizes that peace can only be achieved through a combination of decisive diplomacy and ongoing pressure on Russia.
An important position of the 'Eight' is the assertion of the inadmissibility of changing international borders through force. Negotiations, in their view, are only possible under conditions of a ceasefire.
The Nordic-Baltic Eight is a format of regional cooperation that includes Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden.
It is worth noting that, according to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Volodymyr Zelensky should be present at the negotiations between Trump and Putin. It is unacceptable, the Chancellor states, for territorial issues to be discussed without Ukraine.
Earlier, NATO chief Mark Rutte considered the Trump-Putin meeting a test for the Russian dictator. The meeting will demonstrate how serious the Russian dictator's intentions are.
Ukraine was supported by representatives of eight Northern European and Baltic states, who issued a statement of unwavering support for the integrity of the country during the negotiations between Trump and Putin. They called for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict and the continuation of military and financial support for Ukraine, as well as the application of restrictive measures against Russia to achieve peace.
