In an official statement on its website, the company reported:

“Fly PLAY hf. has ceased operations, and all flights have been cancelled… We kindly advise you to check flights with other airlines.”

Furthermore, the statement noted:

“Some carriers may offer special ‘rescue fares’ considering the circumstances.”

The airline expressed its regret for the situation and thanked passengers for their understanding:

“We are deeply sorry for the disruption this causes and thank you for your understanding.”

Regarding consumer rights, the company stated that customers who purchased tickets by credit card should contact the card issuer for refunds. Those who bought package tours through travel agencies in the European Economic Area should reach out to their agents.

Local media RUV reported that

“400 people are losing their jobs”
and the company is trying to settle its employees' wages.

Since the announcement that

“all flights were halted immediately”
thousands of passengers found themselves in a difficult situation, with many likely to miss their travels or forced to find a way home.

History of PLAY airline

PLAY started its operations in 2019, offering flights to six European cities – Alicante, Tenerife, London, Paris, Copenhagen, and Berlin. The airline's first flights occurred in 2021.

Later, the company added new destinations, including North America in April 2022, and later Africa and Asia. At that time, the airline offered low-cost flights from the UK to the USA for just £139.

Flights from London Stansted included Washington and Boston, with a mandatory stopover in Reykjavik, Iceland. However, at the beginning of this year, PLAY announced the cancellation of all flights from the UK to the USA.

Icelandic airline announced cessation of all operations

Fly PLAY, which managed to gain popularity due to affordable fares and new routes, is now facing serious financial difficulties leading to its shutdown. This decision will certainly impact many passengers who had travel plans, and create challenges for 400 employees who are left without work.

In light of these events, it is crucial to pay attention to consumer rights, as in situations of this scale there is a risk that travelers may be left without proper refunds or support from airlines. The situation with Fly PLAY serves as an important reminder of the need for caution when planning trips and choosing airlines.
