The museum has announced plans for a transformation costing £2.7 million to update the permanent gallery for its 40th anniversary.

The project, titled 'Transformation 2029', will expand the permanent gallery with a larger collection of design objects that will be accessible to visitors. The new design of the main gallery, 'Designer, Maker, User', will facilitate the hosting of exhibitions through complete flexibility of the exhibits.

New technologies are also planned to provide visitors with a more interactive experience.

Project and Funding

The project completion is planned for two years, and the museum will begin hiring new staff. After that, the Design Museum plans to apply for a grant of £2,700,752 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which has already provided £267,249 for the project.

If the museum receives the grant, the project is expected to open to the public in celebration of the museum's 40th anniversary in 2029.

Tim Marlow, Director and Chief Executive of the Design Museum, stated: 'Next year marks the tenth anniversary of the moving phase to our iconic building in Kensington. The expansion and enhancement of our permanent gallery for our 40th anniversary is at the heart of our new strategy 'Transformation 2029', to prepare the museum for the future in the next decade and beyond.'

Johanna Agreman Ross, chief curator of the Conran Foundation at the Design Museum, added: 'Designer, Maker, User was an important collection when the museum moved to West London in 2016, and over the decade it has become a valuable resource for our hundreds of thousands of annual visitors. But it no longer reflects where design is heading.'

The museum has also recently celebrated its record year for temporary exhibitions, including the exhibit 'The World of Tim Burton', which attracted over 260,000 visitors, making it the most popular in the museum's history.

In November, the museum will open a new exhibition - 'Wes Anderson: Archive'. Visitors can explore the extensive archive of the famous director, many objects will be shown in the UK for the first time. The exhibition showcases how Wes Anderson's films have evolved from the 1990s to current projects, including 'The Grand Budapest Hotel', 'Fantastic Mr. Fox', and 'Isle of Dogs'.

In total, over 600 objects will be displayed, including original sketches, puppets, and costumes of characters.
