However, the search for the 71-year-old woman was suspended due to a lack of any leads, local media The Witness reports.

Elaine was reported missing on Saturday, September 27. After a three-day operation conducted by local police and rescue teams with dogs and volunteers, the search ended.

Investigators used drones, helicopters, and planes to find the missing woman.

Despite all efforts, Elaine could not be found.

South African police reported that the investigation would continue in hopes of narrowing down possible areas of her whereabouts.

Elaine embarked on the hike with her husband Leon, 81, from Ghost Mountain Inn and Safari Lodge in eMkhuze. Leon returned early due to the heat, while Elaine continued on to the lake.

He raised the alarm three hours after she failed to return.

Elaine's husband has already left the hotel, and the police do not know where he is now.

The police had previously noted that they

suspect that
a crocodile may have taken Elaine or that another crime occurred, but there is currently no evidence for either of these scenarios.

Colonel Paul Magwaza stated: “The British couple checked in at Ghost Mountain Inn at 1:00 PM and set off on a walk at 2:00 PM.

“According to the husband, during the walk to the lake, he decided to return to the hotel, but when Elaine did not return, he raised the alarm.”
“We are searching day and night, but no traces have been found. It appears she has gone missing without a trace. Dogs also found no signs.”
“If she had simply fallen and died, we would have found her by now. There are various theories about what happened, but I do not want to speculate.”

A police forum member said:

“We are starting to consider whether she was eaten.

The police believe she may have encountered a crocodile, but currently, there is no evidence for this.

Elaine was reported missing by her husband.

Elaine's disappearance coincided with an incident in which a fisherman vanished while trying to catch sardines. Rumors that the man may have been taken by sharks surfaced after friends of the missing 37-year-old fisherman rushed to the scene of his disappearance but retreated when two other sea creatures, likely bronze sharks, approached them.

The horrific attack occurred on July 6 at a beach popular among divers and surfers in Mfazazane, KwaZulu-Natal province, 60 miles south of Durban.

A representative of the National Institute of Maritime Rescue confirmed that the 37-year-old man was reported missing “after a shark incident involving three local fishermen.”

They reported: “We and the South African police, as well as the water police unit and diving unit learned that the man disappeared underwater after a shark appeared on the surface where he was fishing.

“It appears that one of the friends tried to intervene but was surrounded by at least two sharks, so he fled to shore.

“It is believed that the sharks were feeding on shoals of sardines at the time. A large search operation was launched, but no traces of the missing man have been found.”

In the last 25 years, 37 people have died from shark bites off the coast of South Africa, the last being restaurateur Kimón Bizogno, 39, in September 2022.

This situation underscores the risks faced by tourists during hikes in wilderness areas. Elaine’s disappearance has sparked new discussions about safety during outdoor recreation, especially in areas where there is a risk of wild animal attacks. The tension in the search is likely to continue, as Elaine's family and friends hope for a positive outcome to this troubling story.
