Major Attack on Ukraine on July 16, 2023

According to UATV: On July 16, 2023, Russian forces launched a large-scale assault on Ukraine, deploying a mix of missiles and drones. This attack included eight ballistic missiles from the Iskander-M and S-400 systems, along with four Kh-22 and Kh-32 cruise missiles fired from the Black Sea. The overall tally of munitions used was:

  • five loitering munitions of the 'Banderol' type
  • 146 attack drones launched from multiple directions, including Kursk, Oryol, Millerovo, Hvardiiske (occupied Crimea), and areas in Donetsk region.

By 9:00 AM, Ukraine's air defense successfully shot down three Iskander-M and S-400 ballistic missiles, as well as 129 enemy drones. Despite these defensive efforts, five Iskander-M and S-400 ballistic missiles, Kh-31P missiles, and 16 drones struck 15 different locations. The Kh-22 and Kh-32 cruise missiles failed to hit their intended targets.

Strikes on Donetsk, Kherson, and Mykolaiv Regions

It is worth noting that on July 15, Russian troops also targeted the Donetsk, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions using multiple rocket launchers and attack drones. These attacks resulted in at least five civilian deaths and 16 injuries. As stated by the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine:

“According to preliminary data, as of 9:00 AM, air defense units shot down or suppressed three Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 129 enemy drones.”

This offensive is part of the broader military campaign ongoing in Ukraine, highlighting the persistent threat posed by Russian armed forces. The front-line situation remains tense, and the Ukrainian military continues to actively enhance its defensive capabilities. A critical element of this struggle is the air defense system, which has shown a degree of effectiveness, though it cannot completely prevent the destructive impact of such assaults.
