Chef Mark Anderson, along with his wife Sarah, owned the Ruddington Arms pub, which he was forced to close due to numerous challenges encountered over the last three years. These challenges have affected them “mentally, physically, and financially.”
Mark, who was a sous-chef in Gordon Ramsay's first joint venture - the Teatro restaurant in Soho, opened the pub in Nottingham more than ten years ago. It was his first independent project as an owner and chef after a successful career, where he worked with renowned chefs like Terry Laybourne.
Mark significantly changed the business, building a good reputation due to fresh, seasonal products after a complete renovation and the establishment of a new team of staff.
The pub has been recommended in the MICHELIN guide since 2015.
The closure of the establishment on Wilford Road was announced via social media. Mark and Sarah expressed:
“We never thought this day would come.”
Thanking customers, staff, and suppliers, they added:
“Nothing we have achieved would have been possible without you.”
Mark started his culinary career in Northumberland, working at the restaurant 21 Queen Street. During this difficult time, when businesses are feeling the pressure of rising costs, the Andersons note that the situation has never been so challenging.
Mark and Sarah concluded:
“Unfortunately, the debt we have accumulated is no longer acceptable, and we cannot continue.”
Customers, devastated by the news, are actively expressing their disappointment on social media. One remarked:
“I am very sad and shocked to hear this. You worked very hard and created a wonderful pub with delicious food and a great atmosphere.”
In 2019, Mark and Sarah tried to open a new establishment called The Next Episode with a New York-style menu and cocktails, but it closed three years ago.
This situation vividly illustrates the difficulties entrepreneurs face in modern conditions and underscores the importance of supporting local businesses, as such establishments become vital cultural centers in their communities. The closure of Ruddington Arms is yet another example of the negative impact of economic changes on small businesses in the region.
