The Migration Service named the number of Hasidim who arrived in Uman for the celebration of Rosh Hashanah.
Pilgrim-Hasidim have started arriving in the Cherkasy region for the celebration of the Jewish New Year - Rosh Hashanah, which this year is celebrated in October. This was reported by the press service of the State Migration Service of Ukraine.
«Today, the head of the Central-Southern Interregional Department of the State Migration Service Andriy Kocherga visited the city of Uman on a working visit. Together with the employees of the Uman Department of the CSMU SMS, they visited the quarter where the Hasidim live, the grave of the founder of Breslov Hasidism, Tzadik Nachman, and with the participation of representatives of the Uman District Police Department of the National Police in the region and the Department of Strategic Investigations in the Cherkasy region of the National Police of Ukraine, discussed joint measures. The main focuses of the meeting: the security component of the stay of foreign pilgrims and control over their compliance with the legislation on the legal status of foreigners and stateless persons», - the report says.
The Migration Service noted that up to half a thousand Hasidim have already arrived in Uman, but the mass arrival of pilgrims is expected next week. In view of this, the Migration Service, together with law enforcement agencies, has switched to an enhanced work mode.
This year, the largest celebration of Rosh Hashanah with more than 50,000 pilgrims is planned.
Uman's Readiness to Receive Pilgrims
The mayor of Uman, Iryna Pletneva, confirmed the city's readiness to receive pilgrims. She noted that proper sanitary conditions have been ensured and an action plan has been developed in case of emergencies. This was reported by the press service of the State Service for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience based on the results of a working group meeting the day before. Despite Russia's war against Ukraine, thousands of Breslov Hasidim, as every year, plan to arrive in Uman for the celebration of Rosh Hashanah. However, Iryna Pletneva emphasized that due to the limited number of shelters needed for a significant number of pilgrims, the city cannot guarantee 100% safety.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine urges Hasidim to refrain from pilgrimage to Uman for Rosh Hashanah due to Russia's military aggression. In the event of arrival, pilgrims must take into account the restrictions of martial law and possible complications of stay.
Also, earlier, the head of the Cherkasy Regional State Administration, Ihor Taburets, called on Hasidim to refrain from pilgrimage to Uman for the celebration of Rosh Hashanah. Taburets added that during the pilgrimage, an operational headquarters will be deployed for coordination work.
