Kuyalnik Liman on the brink of catastrophe: will it be possible to save the unique reservoir.
Kuyalnik Liman in Odesa region is not just a natural unique feature but also an interesting therapeutic area. Over the last ten years, the liman has experienced changes, particularly the loss of its mineral-salty properties. Scientists believe that the issue can be resolved by introducing sea water through a special facility, but there are limitations. Every year, about 10 million cubic meters of water from the Black Sea is supplied to the liman, but this is not enough for full replenishment.
Kuyalnik has turned red
If the water level falls, one can notice another change in Kuyalnik – the iron gives the water a pink-red color. During the summer months, it picks up such a bright palette due to microscopic inhabitants in the highly saline water. This interesting process characterizes complex biological reactions in the liman, altering the color spectrum from pink spring tones to a red autumn palette. Plans are now being made to seek alternative methods for replenishing the liman with freshwater, as sea water does not affect the salinity of the reservoir.
Barrier at Kuyalnik
Considering the special status of Kuyalnik Liman and the regulation of activities in the area, barriers have been established to limit vehicular traffic and ensure the safety of visitors. The area has also been cleared of accumulated waste. However, the issue of restoring the liman remains relevant, and the administration calls on visitors to protect the environment.
Resort 'Kuyalnik'
The park management is actively working on creating comfortable conditions for visitors and developing tourism in the area. Plans are underway to establish recreational zones, tourist routes, a visitor center, and a nature museum of Kuyalnik Liman. There is also consideration to equip resting places with all necessary infrastructure within the forested area.
