Ukraine’s Defense Ministry Rolls Out Fixed-Term Military Service Contracts.
New Military Service Contracts Introduced in Ukraine
According to Espreso.tv: Starting June 15, 2026, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense is launching a new set of military service contracts with clearly defined durations. This marks a significant shift in how service members can structure their commitment to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other components of the country’s defense forces. From that date, personnel will be able to choose among infantry-assault, combat, or basic service contracts.
Currently serving military members will have the option to sign contracts lasting anywhere from 6 to 24 months. Upon completion of their service, they will be entitled to a guaranteed deferment that takes into account both their prior length of service and combat experience.
“Depending on the type of contract, terms can range from 6 to 24 months, and after service ends, a guaranteed deferment is provided, factoring in previous service time and combat experience,” said Mykhailo Fedorov.
Service Conditions Get an Upgrade
In addition to the new contracts, service members will see new financial benefits starting in July 2023—regardless of whether they sign one of the new agreements. This is part of broader efforts to improve working conditions for troops. On June 12, 2023, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered that additional military pay be provided in June, underscoring the government’s commitment to social guarantees for those in uniform.
The updated contracts also introduce a revamped compensation system, offering greater predictability and more control over one’s military career.
“These new contracts bring clear service timelines, guaranteed post-service deferments, a new pay structure, and more predictability and control over one’s own service,” Fedorov added.
To make the transition to a new contract easier, service members can apply through several channels: the Army+ app, their military unit, Reserve+, or a recruiting center. This streamlined process is designed to help troops plan their service more effectively.
The introduction of these fixed-term contracts reflects the Ministry of Defense’s ongoing push to improve service conditions and preserve social protections for military personnel. With guaranteed deferments and a new pay system, the initiative aims to boost morale and stability within the armed forces—especially critical amid the ongoing war. Clearer service terms and the ability to plan personal life could also make military service more attractive to potential recruits, helping to draw new talent into Ukraine’s defense forces.
