Paton Bridge Nears Collapse: Why Kyiv Lacks Funds for Repairs.
Paton Bridge in a State of Emergency
According to Novyny.live: The Paton Bridge, declared structurally unsound in early 2015, remains in a critical state with its residual lifespan assessed as zero. Maksym Bakhmatov, head of the Desnianskyi District State Administration, reported that plans to close the bridge in 2017 were never realized, and no repair measures have been taken to date. This vital piece of infrastructure, a key crossing over the Dnipro River, is now at a breaking point.
While the Paton Bridge deteriorates, the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) is investing $1 billion in the construction of the new Podilskyi Bridge. This stark contrast in funding priorities highlights a growing infrastructure crisis in the capital. Maksym Bakhmatov sharply criticized the city's financial management, stating,
"Kyiv hasn't received a single loan because they (the KCSA) are idiots. They have squandered all the international funds."His comments underscore the severity of the funding gap and the looming possibility of the bridge's closure.
Findings from the Bridge Inspection
What did the inspection reveal? The metal in the bridge's cross beams is almost completely corroded, a discovery that has raised major safety alarms. Vyacheslav Bogdanov warned that
"the threat of partial or complete collapse of the bridge is entirely real."The situation demands an urgent response from the responsible authorities to ensure public safety and prevent a potential disaster.
The plight of the Paton Bridge illustrates a broader and serious problem with Kyiv's aging infrastructure, which requires immediate attention. The lack of funding for repairing existing structures, while new projects move forward, poses a direct threat to the lives of daily commuters. This case underscores the critical need to balance investment in new development with the essential maintenance of current public works.
