Today, October 1st, the International Day of Older Persons is celebrated worldwide. On this day, the world talks about the active actions taken to protect the interests of older people, creating favorable living conditions for them. It is also an occasion for reflection on the interconnection of generations.

Today is a great opportunity to say warm words of gratitude to parents, mothers, labor veterans, retirees, and all elderly people for their kindness and wisdom, many years of selfless work, and invaluable contribution to the development of Ukraine.

History of the holiday

On December 14, 1990, the UN General Assembly proclaimed October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities related to population aging. The holiday was established to recognize the contributions of older people to society and to raise awareness of their needs. Over Time, this day has become important for many countries that organize various events dedicated to elderly people.

Ukraine, as a full-fledged member of the UN, supported the initiative of the international community and has been celebrating this day annually since 1991. The decision to annually celebrate the International Day of Older Persons in Ukraine and to create appropriate social protection conditions for retirees, people with disabilities, and single non-working citizens was approved by a government decree dated September 26, 1997, № 1066 "On the annual celebration of the International Day of Older Persons".

According to international classification, an elderly person is considered to be someone who has reached the age of 65. By 2050, the number of such people in many developed countries will double (the so-called aging of nations process), and the total number in the world will be two billion people.

According to the UN, it is extremely important to actively utilize the productive and creative potential of older people. Society must simultaneously help overcome the psychological barrier of old age and reduce the burden of social expenses on young people by working retirees.
