Ukraine's Mobilization Pool Could Be Depleted Within 18 Months, Prompting Calls for Systemic Reform
According to TSN.ua: According to available data, Ukraine's pool of potential military recruits may be exhausted within the next year and a half. This situation has been exacerbated by government missteps, which have made the issue of mobilization critically toxic in Ukrainian society. Member of Parliament Ruslan Horbenko emphasized the urgent need for systemic changes within the military sphere, noting that mobilization problems have taken on a systemic character since the beginning of 2024. The ongoing war has placed immense strain on Ukraine's human resources, making efficient and fair mobilization a matter of national survival.
Government Errors and Their Consequences
A central point of discussion has been the government's errors regarding mobilization. Horbenko stated that 'we have not approached this systematically and have made many mistakes in recent years.' A particularly contentious example is a government resolution, set to take effect in August 2025, which allows men aged 18-22 to travel abroad. This decision has provoked public outrage and is seen as a factor complicating the mobilization effort.
In seeking to improve the situation, Ruslan Horbenko also pointed to the possibility of engaging experts. He noted that 'Fedirov could provide President Zelenskyy with expert proposals for a comprehensive approach to mobilization.' This indicates a desire to find new solutions and approaches to overhaul the existing system.
Furthermore, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that 'all contract formats must actually work, and a final decision must be made on mobilization and service conditions.' These statements highlight the need for clear and understandable rules regarding mobilization, which could significantly impact the effectiveness of the country's military efforts in the coming years.
The mobilization situation in Ukraine remains complex and demands an urgent response from the state. Problems arising from inconsistent policy and flawed decisions risk undermining not only military readiness but also public trust in the government. Engaging experts and implementing new approaches could be key factors in overcoming these challenges, though realizing these initiatives will require time and effort. It is crucial for the authorities to learn from past lessons and move toward a more stable and effective military system.
