Experts have detected toxic substances in the sea near Odesa: what it means for vacationers

Ecologists studied the water near the shores of Odesa due to algae blooms that have been ongoing since the beginning of August. They found that the level of toxic substances in the water exceeds the norm.

The situation in the sea

State inspectors took samples of seawater in Odesa, where algae formed a dense layer on the surface. The analysis results showed that the ammonia nitrogen content exceeds the norm by 5.5 times. This substance is toxic and forms during the decomposition of organic matter. It is dangerous for aquatic life, especially under conditions of high temperature and low oxygen levels, which can lead to fish kills.

Additionally, the content of suspended substances in the sea exceeds the norm by 1.5 times. This affects the transparency of the water, its light penetration, and the process of photosynthesis in algae.

There is also an excess of nutrients that contribute to the blooming of the sea.

'The excess of nutrients in the water promotes eutrophication – or 'blooming' of the sea, which leads to oxygen deficiency and deterioration of the marine ecosystem,' reports the State Ecological Inspection of the Southwestern District.

It is worth noting that consuming water from the sea is harmful to human health.

We remind you that earlier we wrote about the dangers posed by algae on the coast and the cost of vacations in Odesa in August.

In short, ecologists have detected dangerous changes in the water near the Odesa coast due to algae blooming. The level of toxic substances exceeds the norm, which may pose a threat to local marine ecosystems.
