Britain warns Europe over comments regarding the Trump-Putin meeting: what is known.
British officials are urging European leaders to stop 'unhelpful comments' regarding the upcoming meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska. They believe that public demands may irritate the US president.
Britain issues a warning to Merz and Macron
Officials have begun to worry about public comments from French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.
Their main fear is that demands on Trump could harm relations and provoke him to the extent that he excludes Europeans from negotiations.
'We are surrounded by European partners who are making a lot of noise and bear great responsibility, but we are not in a hurry to make public demands. We are confident that such an approach could provoke the opposite effect and anger Trump.'
Preparations for the personal meeting between Trump and Putin are ongoing. On August 15, they will meet in Alaska without their advisors for a one-on-one dialogue.
Macron recently drew attention with a statement regarding Ukraine, emphasizing that the fate of the country should be decided by Ukrainians themselves, while Europeans will support the process.
At the same time, Merz believes that President Zelensky should attend the meeting between the US and Russia, as important decisions should not be made 'behind the backs of Europeans and Ukrainians.'
Summary: Britain urges European leaders to be cautious in their demands to Trump before the meeting with Putin. They are concerned that aggressive demands may only provoke the US president, exclude Europe from negotiations, or even strengthen his position.
